Background: The Mayan civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments, as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created, by some estimates, some 1 million refugees. ntries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Missionary of the month:
Luis & Dinora Martinez

Luis and Dinora Martinez were appointed to serve as Global Partners' missionaries to Latin America in November 1999. They assist Wesleyan churches in Guatemala through evangelistic activities and crusades.

In 2004 Global Partners approved the creation of IMPACTO, Luis Martinez Spanish Ministries. IMPACTO assist Luis in his evangelistic ministry of crusades, mission conferences, and short-term mission teams. The number one priority for Luis and Dinora is to win souls for Christ.

Luis was born in Guatemala and raised in a Christian home, began discovering his God-given gifts at age 17 and believed he could reach many people for God. For over 20 years he has been an evangelist with Impact International and continues preaching a 15 minute radio program heard in 27 countries with a potential listening audience of 80 million.

Dinora, also from Guatemala, accepted Christ at a crusade while dating Luis. She actively participates in ministry with Luis.

Luis and Dinora have two daughters: Andrea ('86) and Ana ('88).
